Things that people care about (and shouldn’t).

I’ve been bumping into this a lot over the past several weeks. Things that people intensely care about, and no amount of discussion is really going to change.  The one I bumped into is “top-posting“. I know it makes email easier to read one way or the other (depending on your opinion), but a vehement pro or con? I mean really.

I’ve added it to my own personal list of things that are, in effect, religious debates. You can talk all you want, but the opinion won’t change, regardless of what data or logic you bring to bear.

vi vs emacs
pc vs MAC

Standard political stuff:

  • Democrat/Republican
  • for and against abortion (clever words aside)
  • death penalty
  • etc., etc.

top-posting vs bottom-posting
email vs forums

I, of course, have my opinions on all of those. But I think at this point it’s become more of a realization that people are crazy about one side or the other, and there’s not much to be done about it. That being said, why does anyone think forums are better? I mean really :-)

Clearly there’s subject matter there for the TV ads about people who are doing crazy things because of how much time their phone saves them.
